Local chocolate factory celebrates 30 years in Henderson
The City of Henderson has selected Ethel M Chocolates, who is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, as the honorary grand marshal for the 2011 Henderson Heritage Parade, Saturday, April 16 at 10 a.m. The local manufacture will be recognized for their history of dedicated service, for being an active community partner, conservationist and unique attraction in Henderson. Jennifer Gudgel, Director of Gourmet Chocolate, will represent Ethel M, leading more than 100 parade entries dressed to the theme, “Henderson – Chocolatiers for 30 Years”, down a mile-long route through the historic Water Street District.
“We’re honored to have Ethel M Chocolates as this year’s parade grand marshal,” said Andrea Primo, Director of the Cultural Arts & Tourism Department. “They’re commitment to the community, dedication to educating the public and strong family values are invaluable to the growth of Henderson as one of the greatest cities in America to live, work, play and raise a family.”
For three decades, Ethel M Chocolates has called Henderson home. In 1981, the company’s founder and inventor of M&M’s and Mars bars, Forrest Mars Sr., retired from the family’s business, Mars Incorporated, and created Ethel M Chocolates, a line of gourmet chocolates, as a tribute to his mother and chocolate-making heritage.
The Henderson factory is the only location where the gourmet chocolates are manufactured. It also serves as a unique attraction for the Southern Nevada community, drawing millions of visitors each year to tour the plant and sample the tasty treats at no cost.
Additionally, Ethel M is the home to a smaller version of the Las Vegas Strip M&M’s World, as well as the world famous, Ethel M Botanical Cactus Garden, one of Nevada’s largest collections of cacti. Set on three acres, the gardens include over 300 species of plants.
Currently, the Botanical Cactus Garden is one of the most popular winter holiday traditions in Southern Nevada. Each December, the gardens transform into a wonderland illuminated by over 500,000 lights and offer a free attraction to residents and tourists.
The Henderson Heritage Parade & Festival is a day-long celebration of the City’s 58-year history, rich traditions and community spirit. In addition to the parade, the event includes a Mayor & Council breakfast, classic car show and festival, featuring culturally-diverse entertainment, world cuisine, craft and cooking demonstrations, courtesy of the International Food & Folklife Association. Admission is complimentary.
