Cultural arts series features live performances & family-friendly activities

ArtBeat presented by Target, Henderson’s signature cultural arts series, kicks off its spring season in April with a schedule that will include ukulele prodigy, Jake Shimabukuro; rising country music star, Craig Campbell; original member of The Monkees, Peter Tork & Shoe Suede Blues; Grammy and Oscar Award nominee, Stephen Bishop; and The Van Lears, up-and-coming country duo. ArtBeat will take place on Fridays at the Henderson Events Plaza, 200 S. Water Street, in the Water Street District, with the featured headlining act taking the stage at 8 p.m. Pre-show activities such as art displays, demonstrations and local musical performances will begin at 5 p.m. Admission is complimentary.

Jake Shimabukuro
April 1 at 8 p.m.
With his lightning-fast fingers, innovative playing techniques and contemporary sound, Jake Shimabukuro has revolutionized the perception of the ukulele. The Hawaii native rose to fame through the popularity of YouTube, garnering millions of page hits with his performance of George Harrison’s “While My Guitar Gently Weeps”.

Shimabukuro has shared the stage with the likes of Jimmy Buffett, Bette Midler, Yo-Yo Ma, Cyndi Lauper and Ziggy Marley, as well as played on popular television programs like The Today Show and The Late Show with Conan O’Brien.

The musician’s newest album, Peace Love Ukulele, debuted earlier this year at #1 on the Billboard World Album chart. It combines a number of music genres including rock, classical, bluegrass, funk and jazz.

Craig Campbell
April 8 at 8 p.m.
Taking inspiration from icons like Garth Brooks, Alan Jackson and Clint Black, Craig Campbell portrays the American heartland in a genre of country music that combines powerful vocals and down-to-earth lyrics. In 2010, Campbell released his first single, “Family Man”, a hit that reached #60 on the Hot Country Songs charts. This spring, the musician will release his first full-length, self-title debut album.

Peter Tork & Shoe Suede Blues
April 15 at 8 p.m.
Peter Tork burst onto the music scene in the ‘60s with the made-for-television phenomenon, The Monkees. As the American version of the Beatles, the rock/pop band produced four chart-topping albums and had many international hits including “I’m a Believer”, “Last Train to Clarksville”, “Daydream Believer” and “(I’m Not Your) Steppin’ Stone”.

After the brief success of The Monkees, Tork began to focus on his solo career, performing with his own bands, as well as writing and recording original music. Currently, Tork performs with Shoe Suede Blues, a group that delivers a soulful and memorable mixture of popular blues music.

Stephen Bishop
April 22 at 8 p.m.
Stephen Bishop is a talented singer/songwriter, who has been nominated for an Oscar and two Grammy Awards. He will entertain audiences with hit songs like “Save It For a Rainy Day” and “On and On”, as well as other favorites including “It Might Be You”, from the ‘80s blockbuster, Tootsie. Over the years, Bishop has written songs for many popular artists from Eric Clapton to Barbra Streisand and Pavarotti.

The Van Lears
April 29 at 8 p.m.
The Van Lears are a rising country music group comprised of the brotherly duo of Trey and Andrew Bentley. At only 19 and 22, these gifted men have been compared to the likes of their idols, The Everly Brothers. They are currently in-studio honing their craft and creating songs that combine catchy lyrics and modern harmonies.
