Charity to host head-shaving fundraiser for childhood cancer research
The Southern Nevada Sons of Erin selected the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, a non-profit organization committed to raising money for childhood cancer research, as the honorary grand marshal for this year’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade, Saturday, March 19 at 10 a.m. in Henderson. The charity will lead the procession down a mile-long route on Water Street, from Ocean Avenue to Victory Road.
“We are honored the St. Baldrick’s Foundation is a part of this year’s event,” said Pat Linehan, President of the Southern Nevada Sons of Erin. “Their commitment and dedication to conquer kids’ cancer is truly an inspiration.”
St. Baldrick’s will be recognized as the world’s largest volunteer-driven fundraising opportunity benefiting childhood cancer research at this year’s parade. The foundation, along with its volunteers, will also be honored for their significant contributions, not only locally, but internationally. Since 2000, St. Baldrick’s has raised over $69 million by hosting more than 2,500 events and shaving more than 108,000 heads, nearly 9,000 include women, in 24 countries, all 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia.
In addition to this year’s St. Patrick’s Day festivities, which will be held March 17-20, St. Baldrick’s will host one of its signature head-shaving events, Sunday, March 20 at 3:30 p.m. at the Henderson Events Plaza, 200 S. Water Street, in the Water Street District. People are encouraged to participate by collecting pledges to shave their heads bald, in solidarity of children fighting cancer, and raising funds for research.
Donations collected through the head-shaving event at the St. Patrick’s Day Parade & Festival will help provide grants to over 230 institutions for laboratory research and help make clinical trials available to more children, giving treatment that offers the best chance for a cure and long-term survival.
Additionally, the Southern Nevada Sons of Erin have selected the St. Baldrick’s as this year’s charity of choice. A portion of the proceeds from the St. Patrick’s Day Parade & Festival will benefit the non-profit foundation.
