Ethel M Chocolates to serve as parade grand marshal
The City of Henderson will host its annual Heritage Parade & Festival, a celebration of the City’s 58-year history, rich traditions and community spirit, Saturday, April 16 from 8 a.m. – 7 p.m. at the Henderson Events Plaza, 200 S. Water Street, in the Water Street District. The event, which falls on the actual date of the official incorporation of Henderson, will include a Mayor & Council breakfast, parade, festival and car show. Admission is complimentary.
“It’s inspirational to see the community come together on such a historic and memorable day for Henderson,” said Andrea Primo, Director of the Cultural Arts & Tourism Department. “It’s the support of our residents and their enthusiasm towards such events as the Heritage Parade & Festival that make our city premier.”
The day’s festivities will kick off with Mayor Hafen and City Council serving breakfast to attendees at 8 a.m. in front of the Henderson Convention Center, 200 S. Water Street, followed by the much-anticipated Heritage Parade at 10 a.m.
More than 100 parade entries, from floats to marching groups, special interest vehicles and equestrian participants will travel down the mile-long route on Water Street, from Ocean Avenue to Victory Road, decorated to the theme, “Henderson – Chocolatiers for 30 years”. The theme is a tribute to the 30th anniversary of Ethel M Chocolates, which has called Henderson home since 1981. In addition, the chocolate factory will serve as this year’s Heritage Parade grand marshal.
All parade entries will be judged based on three categories: Incorporation of Theme, Creativity and Overall Appeal. Cash prizes will be awarded to floats for 1st ($1,000), 2nd ($750) and 3rd ($500) place, as well as $500 for the People’s Choice Award, a promotion that debuted at last year’s Heritage Parade as Henderson’s first-ever text message voting campaign. All other categories will receive ribbons.
Additionally, the time-honored event will include a festival featuring world cuisine, culturally-diverse entertainment, craft and cooking demonstrations, courtesy of the International Food & Folklife Association, from 11 a.m. – 7 p.m. at the Henderson Events Plaza, as well as a classic car show on Water Street from 12 p.m. – 6 p.m. Trophies and awards will be given to car show participants in a variety of categories.
